Complicated - the film
The night before last, I watched the film "Complicated" just before bedtime. Well, it is no wonder that I could not sleep afterwards anymore. The film unfortunately depicts the gruesome reality of children with systemic inflammatory (and genetic) diseases (in this case #EDS) so well. Not only do they suffer a horrific debilitating illness but also the harms of false child abuse allegations that many face on top of this illness, due to a medical failure by clinicians to recognise/acknowledge the illness itself.
Unfortunately, this also reflects the reality of many families with pediatric Long Covid and MECFS.
This poses huge ethical challenges, which not only keep me awake at night but I am currently working on these with an interdisciplinary team as it needs very careful disentangling. So more on this later.
